An editor at work, books and references on the desk

EDITORIAL POLICY

Editorial policy

Own less. Choose deeper.

Quiet Picks is a small library that catalogues objects worth keeping. Of what comes home with you, only some will still be there in twenty years. We are the catalog of those things. We select slowly, write at length, revise when our understanding deepens, and remove an entry when its maker abandons its standards. Affiliate links, when they are present, are placed after the editorial decision to include the entry is made independently — never before.

THE THREE QUESTIONS

What earns a place on the shelf

We ask the same three questions of every entry, in order. The answers must, where possible, be in numbers.

I.

Ten-year lifespan

Can it serve, kindly treated, for ten years? Warranty years, parts availability, repair coverage — checked in numbers.

II.

The three-fold good

Cost per year for the buyer, continuity for the maker, kWh and kgCO₂ for the world. We avoid the language of SDGs in favour of measurable facts.

III.

The hundred-year question

A hundred years from now, will a reader still recognise this as careful work? It is an unforgiving question. That is its purpose.

CURATORIAL PROCESS

How an entry reaches the shelf

  1. 01

    Research, primary sources

Manufacturer warranty figures, third-party test results, company longevity records, LCA where available. Sources are cited inside each entry.

  2. 02

    AI-assisted drafting

A local model (Ollama / Qwen family) drafts structure according to the three-question framework. Brand and product names are only introduced once an editor has verified them.

  3. 03

    Editor verification + lived use

A human editor verifies numbers against primary sources and adds first-hand observations from long use. AI cannot supply a decade of wear; we can.

  4. 04

    Catalogued · Revised · Withdrawn

After cataloguing, the entry is revised on specification changes, after long re-evaluation, or when its maker drifts from its earlier standards. When that happens, the entry is withdrawn with the reason recorded in the log of revisions.

LIBRARIANS

The editors

The Quiet Picks editors

A small editorial team, with a librarian's posture: select slowly, write at length, revise when understanding deepens, and remove an entry when its maker abandons its standards. AI assists with the first draft; final judgements and verification rest with the editors.

OF MONEY & THE LIBRARY

Of money and the library

Quiet Picks is in its preparation period. Applications to Amazon Associates US, ShareASale, and Awin will follow the public launch. No affiliate compensation is received at present.

When partnerships are in place, this page and the disclosure page will be updated, and commercial links will be marked. Whether such partnerships exist does not change what enters the catalog.
