Leatherman's $249.95 ARC and $129.95 Wave+ weigh almost the same and carry the same 25-year warranty. The ARC premium buys a MagnaCut blade, FREE magnetic architecture and a different tool set.
The Leatherman Wave+ and Surge share the same warranty, blade steel and basic tool pattern. The Surge adds larger working tools and a blade exchanger for $30, but weighs 47% more. This is the line between a tool you carry and one that lives with the work.
The multi-tool record called the SwissTool the Wave+'s only serious rival and left the warranty comparison at a word: twenty-five years versus life. This record reads both warranty pages closely and finds the surprise in the fine print — the two promises are the same species. Neither covers normal wear; both cover the maker's defects. What actually separates the tools is $15, an ounce, a replaceable wire cutter, and one clause Victorinox's own product page leaves ambiguous.
The first specific record on the Daily tools shelf — and the one its opening note half-excluded. The multi-tool earns its place selectively: we follow the Leatherman Wave+ from a broken-down Fiat 600 in 1975 to a Portland repair bench in 2026, work out the ~$4.80-a-year figure against the drawer of dead imitations, and leave one question open for the record that follows.
