Quiet Picks

DISCLOSURE

Affiliate disclosure

Quiet Picks (referred to below as "the library") participates in, or is applying to, the following affiliate advertising programmes. The status of each is stated plainly:

Programmes

  • Amazon Associates Program (US)current. An affiliate advertising programme designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to Amazon.com.
  • Amazon Associates (Japan / Amazon.co.jp)current. Applies only to Amazon.co.jp destinations, including Japan-facing links on our Prime Day guide.
  • Amazon Europe marketplaces (Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.de, Amazon.fr, Amazon.it, Amazon.es) — not currently monetized. These links remain clean unless OneLink or marketplace-specific Associates IDs are configured.
  • Katalyscurrent (publisher account approved June 2026). No merchant links are live yet: individual merchant programmes on the network are joined one by one, and only where the goods pass the library's decision tree. Most of the network's catalogue will not.
  • Awin (incorporating the former ShareASale network) — first application declined; reapplication in preparation. Affiliate links to selected DTC heritage merchants (Patagonia, Le Creuset, Filson, Allbirds, Snow Peak, etc.) and international craft brands whose goods pass our decision tree.
  • Rakuten Advertisingplanned. Affiliate links to premium apparel and accessories where editorial fit applies.
  • Bookshop.orgplanned. Book links that route affiliate revenue to independent bookstores rather than to a large catalog. The library has a particular kinship with the small bookstore.
  • Patagonia Affiliate Program (direct) and Filson Affiliate Program (direct)planned. Direct programmes with two flagship makers whose 10-year-repairable ethics align closely with the library's editorial criteria.

Earnings

A subset of product and service links inside the library are affiliate links: when a reader follows such a link and completes a qualifying purchase, the library receives a small referral fee at no additional cost to the reader. These fees fund the operating costs of the library (domain, hosting, editorial maintenance).

Editorial independence

Whether to catalogue a product, and where on the shelf to place it, is not influenced by the presence of an affiliate relationship. Each entry is judged by the three questions of the editorial policy: ten-year lifespan, the three-fold good, and the hundred-year question. Where an affiliate relationship would compromise that judgement, the entry is withdrawn — and its withdrawal is recorded in the log of revisions.

Sales & discounts

  • We do not recommend products because they are discounted; a record has to stand on a normal Tuesday.
  • We prefer fewer, better choices, and "who should skip it" gets equal space with "who should buy".
  • We do not use fake scarcity. Prices and availability change; we print none, and ask you to confirm on the store page.

Labelling

Entries that contain affiliate links display a banner at the head of the entry stating "PR — this record contains affiliate links" together with the named programmes (Amazon, Katalys, Awin, Rakuten, Bookshop, Patagonia direct, or Filson direct — whichever apply).

Payments & tax

The library is operated by an individual based in Japan. Affiliate income from US programmes is handled in accordance with the US–Japan tax treaty and applicable law.
