The verdict — 30 seconds

Primary-source researchFacts verified: August 20, 2026

Buy the Wave+ for a tool you intend to carry; buy the Surge for a belt, work bag or vehicle where its larger working tools and Blade Exchanger have named jobs. The Surge's $30 premium is easy to pay, but its extra four ounces must be earned every day.

The decisive reason
Both tools share the core functions and warranty, so the decision reduces to a measurable trade: the Surge adds heavy-duty working capacity and three listed functions while becoming about 47% heavier.
The main weakness
This is a manufacturer-specification comparison, not a load test. Leatherman does not publish a simple plier-force rating for the two pages, and we did not measure grip comfort, cutting force, pocket comfort or the practical size difference between their scissors.

Best for

  • Wave+: everyday or frequent carry where eight and a half ounces is already substantial
  • Wave+: home, bicycle, day-bag and glovebox repairs that need breadth more than leverage
  • Surge: mechanics, maintenance, construction and vehicle-based work using larger tools away from a bench

Skip if

  • Anyone working within reach of a complete toolbox; dedicated tools beat both multi-tools at the bench
  • Air travel in carry-on luggage; both contain blades and should be checked against current transport rules
  • Surge buyers attracted by the count but unable to name a recurring job for the awl, Blade Exchanger or larger scissors

Three-fold good (measurable summary)

Buyer
Leatherman's US pages showed $129.95 for the Wave+ and $159.95 for the Surge on 20 August 2026. Over the shared 25-year warranty span, that is about $5.20 versus $6.40 a year. The $30 gap is small; the lasting cost is carrying 12.5 ounces instead of 8.5.
Maker
The maker and standard warranty do not separate these tools: both are current Leatherman full-size models backed by the same 25-year limited repair-or-replace policy. The Surge premium therefore has to be earned by its physical tools, not a longer promise.
World
Buying one tool matched to the work is the lower-material choice. A Surge that remains in a drawer because it is too heavy duplicates a Wave-sized need; a Wave pushed beyond its smaller format is the wrong kind of economy.

Work it out — a short decision path

  1. 1.Will the tool live within reach of a complete toolbox?

    Yes
Buy neither for that station. Dedicated pliers, drivers and scissors will perform better.
    No
A multi-tool can earn its place; continue with the actual carry location.
  2. 2.Will you carry it in a pocket or day bag most days?

    Yes
Choose the Wave+. Four fewer ounces matters more often than three extra listed functions.
    No
A belt, work bag or vehicle can make the Surge's weight less consequential.
  3. 3.Do larger pliers and scissors, an awl or interchangeable saw and file blades have recurring jobs?

    Yes
Choose the Surge; those are the functions that earn its larger frame.
    No
Choose the Wave+; the shared core already covers general repair.
  4. 4.Are you choosing the Surge only because it costs $30 more and lists 21 tools?

    Yes
Do not confuse a small price gap with a small carry gap. Buy the Wave+ unless the larger tools have work waiting.
    No
If the work is already named, place the Surge with that work rather than treating it as generic EDC.

The cheap upgrade that stays heavy

The Leatherman Wave+ and Surge make the price comparison look almost trivial. Leatherman’s US pages showed $129.95 for the Wave+ and $159.95 for the Surge on 20 August 2026. Thirty dollars buys the larger tool, three more listed functions and the most imposing model of the pair. Spread over their shared 25-year warranty span, the difference is about $1.20 a year.

The price is not the catch. The Surge weighs 12.5 ounces; the Wave+ weighs 8.5. That four-ounce increase makes the Surge about 47% heavier before a sheath or bit kit enters the bag. Unlike the thirty dollars, those ounces are paid again every time the tool is carried.

This comparison therefore begins where a product table usually ends: not which tool has more, but where the tool will live.

What both models already do

Both tools begin with the same Leatherman pattern: needlenose and regular pliers, replaceable regular and hard-wire cutters, electrical crimping and wire stripping, plain and serrated 420HC blades, a saw, spring scissors, can and bottle openers, files and driver functions. Their implements lock. Several commonly used tools open from outside the folded handles.

Both also carry the same standard 25-year limited warranty. The policy covers the original or primary owner for defects in material or manufacturing and lets Leatherman repair or replace at its discretion. It does not turn normal aging into free renewal: rust, corrosion, loss, abuse, alteration and unreasonable use are excluded, and proof of purchase from an authorized dealer may be required.

The multi-tool record asks the prior question — whether to own a multi-tool at all — and records the Wave+ as its general-purpose benchmark. The separate Leatherman vs Victorinox comparison reads the two makers’ warranty language. Here, because maker and warranty are identical, only the two Leatherman formats remain.

If the real alternative is not a larger work tool but a premium tool at almost the same weight, use the Leatherman ARC vs Wave+ comparison. It isolates the ARC’s MagnaCut blade and all-tool one-handed interface from the warranty and carry weight they largely share.

What the Surge adds

The Surge grows in every physical direction: 4.5 inches closed instead of 4, seven inches open instead of 6.25, and 0.8 inch thick instead of 0.7. Its primary blade is 3.1 inches instead of 2.92. Leatherman describes it as one of its largest and strongest multi-tools, with larger pliers and longer blades intended for demanding work.

Its most useful structural difference is the Blade Exchanger. The Surge’s saw and files fit the exchanger rather than living as permanently hinged tools, allowing the working insert to be swapped. That makes a worn or task-specific cutting surface less terminal and gives the tool a role closer to a compact work platform.

The Surge also adds a stranded-wire cutter and an awl with a thread loop, uses larger screwdriver functions, and places substantial spring-action scissors among its four outside-opening tools. These are not three decorative checkboxes. They point toward electrical work, materials, maintenance and rougher cutting — jobs where a larger handle and working end are the reason to accept the mass.

What the Wave+ keeps

The Wave+ is not a stripped Surge. Its 18 functions already cover the general repairs most multi-tool owners can name, including two blades, a saw, wood/metal and diamond-coated files, spring scissors, replaceable wire cutters, a large bit driver, a small bit driver and a medium screwdriver.

At four inches closed and 8.5 ounces, it is still a substantial pocket object. Calling it light would be advertising by comparison. But it is four ounces less substantial than the Surge, short enough for a day bag, glovebox or deliberate pocket carry without pretending a belt tool is ordinary EDC.

The small bit driver is also a genuine distinction rather than a missing feature. Buyers working with eyeglass-size screws or other small fasteners should compare the actual included drivers, not assume the 21-tool model contains every function of the 18-tool model in a larger shell.

Belt tool or pocket tool

Choose the Wave+ when the purpose is breadth carried regularly: household fixes away from the drawer, a bicycle bag, a day bag, a glovebox or occasional field work. Its central advantage is not that it costs thirty dollars less. It is that the complete tool is more likely to come with you.

Choose the Surge when the tool has a station: a belt sheath, service bag, work vehicle, workshop apron or maintenance kit. Larger pliers and scissors, longer blades, an awl and the replaceable saw/file interface can earn the weight when those jobs recur and the dedicated toolbox remains elsewhere.

Do not choose the Surge because twenty-one is larger than eighteen. The three-function count understates its physical advantage for heavy work and overstates its advantage for ordinary carry. A heavier tool left behind has zero functions at the moment they matter.

And do not buy either for a bench already surrounded by full-size tools. The dedicated pliers record explains why one properly sized pair can be the deeper object when folding compactness is unnecessary. A multi-tool earns its compromise through presence, not superiority.

The decision is finally simpler than the catalog: carry the Wave+; place the Surge with work substantial enough to deserve it. If you cannot name that work yet, the extra thirty dollars is not the risk. The extra four ounces are.
