The number everyone repeats about a mattress is its expiry date. Replace it every seven to ten years, the guidance runs — and for the foam most beds are made of, that guidance is roughly right: an innerspring is spent at around five-and-a-half to six-and-a-half years, memory foam at seven to ten, the surface holding the shape of a body that has long since gotten up. The Sleep Foundation and the mattress trade both circle the same figure, and tell you to start checking at the seven-year mark. But seven-to-ten years is a fact about a material, not about sleep. Natural latex, under the same nightly load, lasts around fifteen to twenty-five years — roughly twice as long — and the frame it sits in, if it is solid wood bolted rather than glued, longer still than that.
The expiry date is not a law of the bed. It is the half-life of the cheapest thing we put in one — and the rest of this shelf is only the arithmetic.
What this shelf is
This is the opening note for the Sleep & rest shelf. It is not a buying guide and not a record of any one bed. It is a frame: we look at the materials, the makers in years, and the layer that decides whether a bed is renewed for two decades or hauled to the curb at the first sag.
Sleep & rest is the shelf where the object is layered. A bed is not one thing but a stack of them — a frame, a core, a topper, bedding, a pillow — and renewal happens layer by layer, so the whole need never be discarded at once. A coat is worn out by being worn; a pan by neglect. A bed is the rare object where the part that fails first is the cheapest to renew and the part that lasts longest is the part underneath. That is the distinguishing fact of this shelf, and the durability axis follows from it: a material that resists compression, a structure you can take apart or refill, and a usable-life horizon measured in decades rather than seasons.
We do not make the case by attacking cheap beds. The argument here is physics, not scolding — what compresses and what recovers, what bolts apart square and what shears at the glue line. The bed that earns a place does so on the mechanics.
What survives sleep
A bed yields to compression, to moisture, to the nightly load of a body. Most foams surrender to the first of these and have no answer. A few materials, and a few joints, do.

Latex is the unfair benchmark of this shelf — the single material that quietly outlasts the category around it. It is a single dense substance rather than a laminate of glued layers, and it recovers its shape where foam takes a permanent set. Press a hand into memory foam and the dent stays a moment too long; press it into latex and it pushes back to flat. That recovery, repeated nightly for years, is the difference between around fifteen to twenty-five years of life and foam’s seven to ten — roughly two-to-one. Solid hardwood, bolted not glued — the frame that outlives the bed
The frame is the longest-lived object in the room, and the reason is a joint. A solid-hardwood platform — maple, walnut, oak, ash — joined by mortise-and-tenon and reinforced with concealed bed bolts comes apart square and goes back together square, across move after move and decade after decade. A glued or particleboard frame survives the first disassembly and shears at the joint on the second; the failure point and the disposal point are the same point. The wood is not the variable. The joint is.

Wool and down — the layer you air and refill, not replace
The bedding is the smallest renewable layer and, counterintuitively, among the most durable. A wool comforter lasts roughly ten to twenty-five years, maintained not by washing but by airing — laid in sun and fresh air, the old “sun-wash,” because wool resists odour and bacteria on its own. Wool fibre is often cited — the figure traces to the Woolmark trade — as bending some twenty thousand times before it breaks; whatever the exact number, the fibre’s springiness is part of why a wool layer holds its loft for years rather than matting flat. Down lasts decades on the same principle: re-lofted by shaking and air-drying, and when it finally tires, re-stuffed — the baffles opened, the spent fill removed, fresh down added, the seam stitched shut. The fill is renewed; the duvet is kept.
Materials we do not put on the shelf
- All-foam beds, retired at seven to ten years. Compression is permanent; there is no recovery to wait for and no layer to renew. The bed ends when the foam sets.
- Glued and particleboard frames, where the joint is the disposal point. The first move is survivable; the second is the end.
- Blended synthetic fills that mat down and cannot be re-lofted or re-filled. Once flat, they stay flat — there is nothing to open and refresh.
The library boundary excludes the buy-and-bin-on-schedule pattern, and the objection is mechanical, not moral: there is simply no layer for this shelf to renew. A bed built to be replaced on a timer leaves nothing for the catalog to record.
Foam holds the dent; latex pushes back to flat. Wool is aired, down is refilled, the frame is bolted apart and bolted back. None of these is the end of the bed — only the end of a layer.
The economy of renewal
The signature of this library is the same on every shelf: divide the price by the years, and count the years honestly. On the Sleep & rest shelf, the years multiply, because the bed is renewed in layers — the surface refreshed long before the structure is spent.
A natural-latex mattress at around $1,800, kept for roughly twenty years, is about $1,800 ÷ 20 ≈ $90/year. A foam bed at around $1,000 retired every eight years or so runs to roughly $125/year over the same span — and leaves nothing at the end of it. (Round every figure toward the larger number; the conclusion only widens if you are gentler with it.)
The frame bends the math further. A solid-hardwood frame at around $1,200, carried across thirty years and more, approaches $40/year and falling — by the end it costs less per year than moving it does — against a glued frame discarded on its second move and bought again.
And the topper is the cheapest move of all. A $150 latex or wool topper that restores a tired surface defers a full mattress replacement, renewing the failed layer for a fraction of replacing the whole. A buckwheat-hull refill renews a pillow for the price of a few coffees. The surface is the consumable; the bed underneath is not.

A bed you renew is cheaper than a bed you replace — even counting the toppers and the fresh fill that renewal asks for.
The makers, in years
A maker’s age is the cheapest number to verify and the most expensive to fake — and on this shelf it comes paired with a second number: how long the maker stands behind the bed, and whether the layer can be renewed at all.
Avocado. GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex, with a GOTS-certified cotton-and-wool cover, a 25-year limited warranty, designed for around twenty to twenty-five years. It is a younger direct-to-consumer maker, sold in a box rather than a store, and we say so plainly: the warranty is the company’s promise, and latex’s long life is the material property underwriting it. We lean on the second. (No compliant marketplace merchant, so it carries the argument in prose only.)
Saatva / Zenhaven. The Zenhaven is a flippable, dual-sided bed in 100% natural Talalay — the flip itself a structural renewal, two firmness lives built into one mattress. Sold exclusively through Saatva’s own site, so it too appears here by name and not by link.
US hardwood frame shops. Vermont Woods Studios and BedWorks of Maine build in solid North American hardwood, mortise-and-tenon reinforced with bed bolts, no veneer or MDF. These are custom-shop direct; the frame argument lives in the prose, not in a link.
The layers that are served at the counter. Where a maker is young, we say so and rest the case on the material’s verifiable property rather than the brand’s promise. Continuity, and a stated multi-decade horizon, is itself a number — read as a promise, not a guarantee.
What we look at when we record a bed
Each entry on this shelf is read along the same axes:
- Less — Do you need a new bed, or a new layer? The cheapest record is the one that ends in a topper restores the bed you already have. A surface that sags is not always a mattress that is spent.
- Deep — What is the material (Dunlop or Talalay, full latex or hybrid), the joint (mortise-and-tenon and bolts, or glue), the fill (wool, down, the maker’s unbroken years)? In numbers.
- Durable — How many years does the material hold its shape, how many moves does the frame survive, how many refills does the fill take — and what is the warranty horizon, read as a promise, not a guarantee?
- Honest — Is the listing describing the bed, or the sleep it implies you’ll have? A mattress is latex, a cover, and a layer; the rest is for the buyer’s self-image, not the night’s rest.
- Future — In twenty years, renewed at the surface and bolted through a move or two, is this still the bed you’d keep? If you cannot picture it re-topped and reassembled and still slept in, it is not for the shelf.
In twenty years, renewed and reassembled, will this still be the bed you sleep in? If you cannot imagine it kept, it is for the curb, not the shelf.
