Buy the Classic Bedale if you want the shorter riding-derived jacket; pay $25 more for the Classic Beaufort only when its longer hem or full-width rear game pocket is useful. Their listed 6oz Sylkoil shell and maintenance path are otherwise the same choice.

The decisive reason
Holding the wax fabric constant isolates the real decision: Barbour lists 6oz Sylkoil and a cotton lining for both, while the Beaufort extends the cut and adds the rear game pocket.
The main weakness
Barbour publishes back-length ranges across size runs, not a same-size fit comparison, and we did not try either jacket on. Sleeve length, chest ease, layering and where the hem lands can overturn a specification-only recommendation.

Best for

  • Classic Bedale: buyers who prefer a shorter jacket around cars, bicycles, seats or everyday movement
  • Classic Beaufort: buyers who want more lower-body coverage or will use the full-width rear game pocket
  • Either: someone willing to sponge-clean and re-wax the same coat instead of machine-washing or replacing it

Skip if

  • Anyone who needs a light, packable technical rain shell or a garment marketed as fully waterproof
  • Buyers unwilling to sponge-clean and periodically re-wax waxed cotton
  • Someone ordering by model reputation alone without checking chest room, sleeves, hem and return terms

Three-fold good (measurable summary)

Buyer
Barbour's US pages listed the Classic Bedale at $425 and Classic Beaufort at $450 on 21 August 2026. The $25 buys the Beaufort's longer cut and full-width rear game pocket, not a heavier wax fabric or a different maintenance system.
Maker
Both compared jackets use 6oz waxed cotton, a cotton lining, optional hood and zip-in liner compatibility, and Barbour's quoted repair and re-wax route. Neither product page establishes a superior durability tier.
World
Choose the one cut that will cover the work you actually do, then re-wax it. Buying both for the same weather duplicates almost the entire material and maintenance system.

Work it out — a short decision path

  1. 1.Do you already own a waxed jacket that fits and still serves the same weather?

    Yes
Re-wax or repair it. A second near-duplicate coat is not a saving.
    No
Continue only if waxed cotton's care and weight suit the job.
  2. 2.Will a shorter hem make sitting, riding or daily movement easier for you?

    Yes
Start with the Classic Bedale and test it over the layers you will wear.
    No
Continue to the coverage and pocket question.
  3. 3.Do you want the longer cut or expect to use the full-width rear game pocket?

    Yes
Choose the Classic Beaufort; those are the concrete returns on its $25 checked premium.
    No
Choose the Classic Bedale; the shared 6oz Sylkoil and maintenance path remove the need to pay more.
  4. 4.Can you try the intended size over a sweater or use a seller with workable return terms?

    Yes
Let actual hem, chest and sleeve fit settle the decision.
    No
Delay the purchase. The maker's back-length ranges cannot predict fit on your body.

The verdict is a hem, not a hierarchy

Barbour’s Classic Bedale and Classic Beaufort look like two price tiers until their specifications are placed side by side. On 21 August 2026, Barbour’s US pages listed them at $425 and $450. The more expensive Beaufort does not receive a heavier wax fabric, a different lining or an exclusive maintenance route. Both list a 6oz waxed-cotton outer, a cotton lining and compatibility with an optional hood and zip-in liner.

The useful differences are physical. The Classic Bedale is the shorter, riding-derived jacket. The Classic Beaufort runs longer and adds a full-width lined rear game pocket. That is what the $25 buys.

Choose the Bedale when a shorter hem suits movement and daily use. Choose the Beaufort when more coverage or the rear pocket will be used. Neither is the superior wax jacket independent of the person inside it.

What stays the same

This is a matched-material comparison. Both Classic models use Barbour’s 6oz Sylkoil waxed cotton and a 100% cotton lining. Both product pages describe a relaxed or regular shape built around a two-way front zip and studded storm fly. Both provide two lower bellows pockets, two moleskin-lined handwarmer pockets and a corduroy collar prepared for an optional hood.

Both also accept an optional zip-in liner. Buying the Beaufort is therefore not a shortcut to a warmer standard jacket. The longer hem may change coverage, and individual fit changes how air moves, but the maker’s material list does not establish a warmer model. We did not wear-test them and will not convert length into a laboratory result.

Their care is the same: do not machine-wash; sponge-clean the surface and renew the wax. Barbour’s US service accepts its waxed-cotton garments for inspection, then quotes the re-wax or repair it can perform. The company recommends re-waxing annually depending on wear, while warning that some garments eventually arrive too damaged or outside what its team can repair.

The broader waxed-jacket record explains that ownership cycle and compares Barbour with heavier Filson Tin Cloth. This page answers the narrower question after Barbour has already won a place on the shortlist: which of its two classic cuts should cover the same body?

What the Classic Bedale keeps short

Barbour says the Bedale was introduced for riding. Its current US Classic page lists back lengths from 72.5 to 81.3cm across the size run, and sizes 30 through 52. Barbour’s separate Bedale guide traces the design’s double rear vents to movement with horse and rider.

That origin translates cleanly beyond a saddle: a shorter hem has less material beneath the wearer while sitting or moving. It can be the calmer choice for a jacket used in a car, around town or anywhere the Beaufort’s extra length feels like more coat than the job requires.

Do not turn that into “the Bedale fits short” for every body. The listed number changes with size, and torso length changes with the wearer. The useful action is to put it over the sweater or jacket expected underneath, sit down, reach forward and see where the hem actually lands.

The Bedale’s lower price is secondary. If the shorter cut fits the job, save the $25. If it leaves the coverage you wanted missing, the saving is false.

What the Classic Beaufort adds

The Classic Beaufort’s US page lists back lengths from 79 to 86.5cm across its sizes, which run from 34 through 52. Barbour first offered the design in 1983 and specifically pitches its relaxed cut as capable of going over a suit.

Its other unmistakable addition is the full-width lined rear game pocket. The feature comes from a field-jacket use, but a buyer does not need to carry game to use it. Gloves, a folded cap or other bulky items can fit there — provided the wearer actually likes weight across the lower back.

That proviso matters. An unused rear pocket is only extra fabric and hardware. The $25 premium is small beside a $400-plus purchase, but price is not permission to add a feature without a use. Buy the Beaufort because its hem reaches the right place or its storage solves something; do not buy it because the catalog positions a larger number as an upgrade.

The longer cut also needs an honest fitting over the clothes it will cover. Barbour’s suggestion that it can sit over a suit is a use case, not a guarantee that every size will cover every suit jacket correctly.

The $25 is the smallest part of fit

The model pages both label the fit regular, while their descriptions use relaxed language. That tells a buyer to expect room; it does not choose a size. The Bedale starts at size 30 on the checked US page, while the Beaufort starts at 34, and their published back lengths are ranges across different size runs.

Measure the chest according to Barbour’s current guide, then test the actual garment with the intended layer. Check four things before keeping it:

  1. The storm fly should close without pulling across the chest.
  2. The sleeves should still work when reaching forward.
  3. The hem should land where coverage and sitting comfort agree.
  4. An optional liner needs room; buying skin-tight and adding insulation later works against the system.

Online buyers should verify the exact model code as well as size and color. MWX0010 identifies the Classic Bedale family; MWX0002 identifies the Classic Beaufort family. Search results can mix Classic Sylkoil versions with regular Bedale or Beaufort variants in other wax finishes. That is why the purchase links use model-specific searches instead of pretending one size-specific Amazon ASIN represents every buyer.

One jacket, maintained

The strongest reason to buy either model is not the difference between them. It is the shared ability to renew a wax finish and send the same cotton garment through Barbour’s inspection and repair route.

That durability still depends on behavior. Wax wears away. A machine wash is not the care path. A jacket ignored until fabric damage overtakes the finish can pass beyond an economical repair. “Repairable” is a route, not immunity from use.

So choose once. If the shorter hem is the point, buy the Classic Bedale. If the longer coverage or rear game pocket answers a real need, the Classic Beaufort is worth the extra $25 observed at the maker. Then sponge-clean it, re-wax it as wear asks, and resist buying the other cut to perform the same job.

The better Barbour is the one whose length you keep wearing.
